Art in the Park
Overview
Custom House Bookshop is hosting four events over the Easter Holidays in Central Park, East Ham. Participants will be invited to ‘Read’ four trees along the Central Park Tree Trail and then guided in a creative making session of drawing, creating face masks, or collage. Art in the Park is one of Culture Within Newham’s Micro-Commissions.
About the sessions
Each session will start with a walk along the 'Central Part Tree Trail' looking at the twenty-four trees that form the Trail. A laminated map will be provided to give further information about each tree.
Participants will be encouraged to 'Read' the tree by noting the physical characteristics such as the shape and patterns of each tree, and to collect bark, twigs, leaves and pine cones to inspire their artwork created later at a creative workshop at Central Park Cafe.
Each session will have a subject matter expert involved;
Dr Clare Woodward who has a PhD in Botany from Imperial College at the first session
Matt Ponting, a well-known local artist who has complete several commissions from Newham Council related to art and nature including the 'Greenway Pollinator Trail' and 'Hidden Characters' at East Ham Nature Reserve'
Vicki Evans, local artist who specialises in art, children and nature
Refreshments
A healthy 'Snack Box' will be provided at the end of each session to the participants, courtesy of Central Park Cafe.

What are Micro-Commissions for Newham?
In December 2024 Culture Within Newham launched a new micro-commissioning scheme for grants of up to £1,000. The first round offered commissions to artists and organisations in the Green Street, East Ham, Manor Park, and Little Ilford areas. The second round of commissions was for Custom House, Beckton, and Royal Albert/North Woolwich.
The micro-commissions aim to support new ideas, providing an opportunity to build experience in delivering artistic or creative projects. Meet the rest of the Micro-Commissions on their dedicated project page.
