ESOL Skills Share Conversation Café

Skills Share, ESOL Conversation Café, is an 8-week program where talented locals can showcase their skills—from henna design to music—while practicing English in a friendly, social setting. ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. Enjoy creative demonstrations, connect with the community over refreshments, and build confidence in a fun and supportive environment. This project is run by the Renewal Programme and was commissioned as one of the Micro-Commissions for Newham.

Every Friday in March and April between 9.30am and 11am, one of the English learners will lead a session, sharing their talents in crafts such as:

  • Henna design

  • Calligraphy

  • Crochet

  • Knitting

  • Sewing

  • Drawing

  • Cake decorating

  • Dance

  • Music

  • Singing.

Following each demonstration, attendees will have the opportunity to socialise over tea, coffee, and refreshments in a relaxed, social environment.

An ESOL tutor will be present to aid and encourage conversation. By taking a leadership role, it is actively demonstrated to learners that their skills are valued, boosting their confidence and their emotional well-being. By sharing cultural aspects of the learners’ skills, the Renewal Programme aims to build stronger communities and open up opportunities for social engagement. All members of the community are invited to participate in the Skills Share ESOL Conversation Café.

Learn something new, share your talents, and connect with your neighbours in a welcoming environment.

The Renewal Programme is a registered charity based in Newham. They work with local communities, council, businesses and charities to empower individuals and our borough.

Founded in 1971 by Reverends Clifford Hill, Ted Finch and Rowland Joiner, their shared aim was to support individuals and communities, with the end goal of independence. This aim is still reflected in their values of Dignity, Inclusion, Collaboration and Empowerment.

The Renewal Programme will be hosting the Skills Share ESOL Conversation Café celebrating the diverse talents within our community.

About Micro-Commissions for Newham

In December 2024 Culture Within Newham launched a new micro-commissioning scheme for grants of up to £1,000. The first round offered commissions to artists and organisations in the Green Street, East Ham, Manor Park, and Little Ilford areas. The second round of commissions was for Custom House, Beckton, and Royal Albert/North Woolwich.

The micro-commissions aim to support new ideas, providing an opportunity to build experience in delivering artistic or creative projects.
