Through Your Eyes

Overview

‘Through Your Eyes’ is a series of guided photo walks where Newham residents will be invited to use smartphones or cameras to explore and document their neighbourhood.

In the photography workshops participants will reflect on creative prompts, and share and reflect on their images together in a supportive and accessible environment. The goal is to build confidence in both technical skills and creative expression.

The workshop series ends with a community exhibition showcasing the work produced, and celebrating Newham’s people, places and stories through authentic personal perspectives.

About the project partners

Lead Facilitator — Jess
Jess is a Newham-based creative facilitator who loves using smartphones to capture everyday moments and make lasting memories. He enjoys nature and long walks, often using them as chances to document the world around him. Jess has been involved in community arts projects across London, supporting people of all skill levels in developing confidence with visual storytelling.

Guest Speaker — Leila
Raised in East Ham, she now mentors young photographers and consults on socially-driven arts programmes. Leila joins the workshop to share insights on storytelling through images, building a creative practice, and using photography to document lived experience with impact.

Project Coordinator — Kisha

Kisha works behind the scenes to keep the workshop running smoothly, managing planning, logistics, and practical tasks like sourcing materials and organising resources.

Her careful coordination ensures everything is ready and in place, so the facilitators can focus on leading the sessions.

What are Micro-Commissions for Newham?

In December 2024 Culture Within Newham launched a new micro-commissioning scheme for grants of up to £1,000. The first round offered commissions to artists and organisations in the Green Street, East Ham, Manor Park, and Little Ilford areas. The second round of commissions was for Custom House, Beckton, and Royal Albert/North Woolwich. The third round offered micro-commissions of up to £3,000 to projects in all of the areas listed above.

The micro-commissions aim to support new ideas, providing an opportunity to build experience in delivering artistic or creative projects. Meet the rest of the Micro-Commissions on their dedicated project page.
