Voices from the Garden
Overview
The Rainbow Community Garden are creating an interactive audio trail based around their Festival of Stories workshops (initially run back in November 2024). The work produced includes written stories, sound files, photos and drawings which will be stored on a website and accessible from QR codes within the garden, creating a story trail for all to enjoy. Voices from the Garden is one of Culture Within Newham’s latest micro-commissions.
The Rainbow Community Garden will use their to capture the highlights of their Festival of Stories to remain both in the garden and online. They have a variety of types of stories to share:
Creative writing
Stories of being in nature
Wordjams
Drawings, and
Descriptive writing about Rainbow Garden in 2040.
A range of the finished pieces will be read aloud captured as 'audio files'. The audio files will be hosted on our Skate Newham website & on our Culture within Newham page and QR codes linked to the audio files will be produced and displayed in the garden.
Residents will be able to walk in the garden and scan the QR codes on display and listen to the audio tracks as they enjoy the garden. The Rainbow Garden Community are excited to be able to share these brilliant stories with a wider audiences online, creating a lasting legacy.

What are Micro-Commissions for Newham?
In December 2024 Culture Within Newham launched a new micro-commissioning scheme for grants of up to £1,000. The first round offered commissions to artists and organisations in the Green Street, East Ham, Manor Park, and Little Ilford areas. The second round of commissions was for Custom House, Beckton, and Royal Albert/North Woolwich.
The micro-commissions aim to support new ideas, providing an opportunity to build experience in delivering artistic or creative projects. Meet the rest of the Micro-Commissions on their dedicated project page.
