The Storytelling Roadshow, led by writer and community facilitator Farzana Hakim, is an interactive creative writing initiative designed to empower local residents, particularly women aged 45 and over from minority and underrepresented backgrounds, to find and share their voices through storytelling.
This six-part series of workshops will take place in libraries and community spaces across Newham, including East Ham, Manor Park, and Green Street. By bringing creative opportunities directly to the heart of the community, the roadshow aims to make storytelling accessible, inclusive, and joyful.
Farzana, who has previously worked on projects amplifying the voices of South Asian women, will share stories she has collected from Newham residents as well as her own journey into creative writing. Through freewriting exercises, practical tips, and open mic sessions, participants will learn techniques to capture their experiences and imagination in writing. Stories can take many forms such as poetry, short stories, oral history, or even art, allowing everyone to express themselves in a way that feels authentic.
The roadshow is more than just a series of workshops; it is a celebration of community voices. Each session will provide a safe, vibrant space for participants to explore cultural heritage, life experiences, and creativity. To ensure a lasting impact, the project includes a legacy element: a framed collage of quotes and words from participants, displayed in community venues as a tribute to their voices and stories.
Working in collaboration with local organisations such as Jazanne Arts and The Blossom Group, Farzana will host the roadshow in a fun and colourful manner, using open mic sharing to give participants the full stage. The finale showcase at East Ham Library will bring together all the stories created during the workshops for the community to read, see, and enjoy.
The aim is simple yet powerful: to build confidence and wellbeing, foster meaningful connections, and amplify diverse voices. By celebrating stories with passion and joy, the Storytelling Roadshow will leave behind not just words, but a lasting reminder of creativity and empowerment in Newham.
Farzana is the host and founder of ‘Hear My Voice,’ creative writing workshops for women. Writing stories gave her a sense of empowerment and she now encourages other women, especially from minority backgrounds, to break silences and find their voices through the art of creative writing.
